Short Story ... The Two Monks

A young Buddhist monk walked with an elder monk on their way back to their temple after several days of travel. On the way, they came to a creek bed, the banks of which had softened to a wet, slushy mess. At the edge of the creek stood an attractive young woman dressed in traditional gowns, who was obviously wanting to cross the water but had no idea how to contend with the mud. If she attempted to traverse it, her legs would surely sink shin-deep into the muck.

As they approached the young lady, the younger monk averted his eyes and looked down, for theirs was a stern discipline, and monks were not allowed to gaze upon a woman, let alone speak to or interact with her, particularly when the woman was as fetching and young as this one. To his horror, however, the older monk walked straight toward the woman and asked her if she needed to cross. The woman shyly said yes, and without another word, he hoisted her piggy-style onto his back and carried the woman across the creek. The younger monk followed them across the creek, stunned. Once on the other side, the woman profusely thanked her new friend, shook his hand, and resumed her journey, disappearing into the trees.

The young man was aghast, but respectful of his elder, he held his tongue. For three hours they walked side by side, all the while the student confused as to how his companion could so flagrantly violate one of the cardinal rules of their temple. The older one had, after all, not only engaged the woman, he had spoken to her, and then not only did he touch her, he carried her on his back! How could such a thing be justified?!

For another hour they walked in total silence, and finally came the point when the young man could stand it no longer. He stepped forward two paces and then whirled on his walking companion to face him in anger. "How could you do that?!" he shouted.

"Do what?" asked the older monk, looking at him.

He rolled his eyes. "It is a sin to touch a woman, a violation to even gaze upon her, and yet you spoke with her. You...you...shook her hand!" He sputtered in his anger. "You carried her across the creek! YOU CARRIED HER!!"

"And you still carry her," said his older friend, smiling the faintest of smiles and bowing slightly. "I left her back at the river."

ASP.NET, Role of an XML file

XML, stands for Extended Markup Language, is a kind of technology that is serving to the entire information and communication world. Here in this write-up, I am not going in detail; rather I would like to say that an XML file could contribute much more, if intelligence towards security, performances and configuration management is expected.

Following example illustrates how easy it is to form a tabular data, which can be used to extend further.  I am using .NET for this and trying to show those different treatments required for repeater and data grid control

'''dbXml.xml, the contents'''
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>
<db>
    <tbl><fld id="01">Data1</fld></tbl>
    <tbl><fld id="02">Data2</fld></tbl>
    <tbl><fld id="03">Data3</fld></tbl>
</db>

'''fn.aspx, only repeater, it can be placed in any aspx file'''
<asp:repeater id="repOne" runat="server">
    <headertemplate>
        <table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tr>
    </headertemplate>
    <itemtemplate>
        <td>
            <table id="tblOne" runat="server">
                <tr>
                    <td >
                        <asp:linkbutton runat="server" causesvalidation="False"
                            onclick="someserversidemethod" id="lbOne"
                            text='<%# Container.DataItem.InnerText%>'>
                        </asp:linkbutton>
                        <asp:label runat="server" id="lblOne" visible="False"

    </itemtemplate>
    <footertemplate>

    </footertemplate>
</asp:repeater>

'''fn.aspx.vb for repeater'''
Private Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
    Dim xDoc As New XmlDocument

    Dim xnList As XmlNodeList = doc.SelectNodes("db/tbl/fld")
    repOne.DataSource = xnList
    repOne.DataBind()
End Sub

Short Story ... Nothing but the Truth!

David Casstevens of the Dallas Morning News tells a story about Frank Szymanski, a Notre Dame center in the 1940s, who had been called as a witness in a civil suit at South Bend.

"Are you on the Notre Dame football team this year?" the judge asked.

"Yes, Your Honor."

"What position?"

"Center, Your Honor."

"How good a center?"

Szymanski squirmed in his seat, but said firmly: "Sir, I'm the best center Notre Dame has ever had."

Coach Frank Leahy, who was in the courtroom, was surprised. Szymanski always had been modest and unassuming. So when the proceedings were over, he took Szymanski aside and asked why he had made such a statement.

Szymanski blushed. "I hated to do it, Coach," he said. "But, after all, I was under oath."

There is no time like the present

Mark Twain said, “I have been through some terrible things in my life, some of which actually happened.”  These words hold great wisdom; the wisdom of knowing that there is no sense worrying about the past or fearing the future.  Your past will not change, and your future concerns may never come.  Many people spend a great deal of time and energy thinking about past problems and future concerns while the present is passing them by.

Remember the here and now is a gift, which is why they call it the ‘present’.  Treat it like a present, enjoy it to the fullest and make the most of it.  Don’t let your life pass you by, focus on the present and enjoy today!

Multitasking, Multithreading, and Multiprocessing

Multitasking refers to the ability of the operating system to quickly switch between tasks, giving the appearance of simultaneous execution of those tasks. For example, on Windows 3.1, a task is generally an entire application, such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, or LabVIEW. Each application runs for a small time slice before yielding to the next application. Windows 3.1 uses a technique known as cooperative multitasking, where the operating system relies on running applications to yield control of the processor to the operating system at regular intervals. Windows 2000/XP rely on preemptive multitasking, where the operating system can take control of the processor at any instant, regardless of the state of the application currently running. Preemptive multitasking guarantees better response to the user and higher data throughput.

Multithreading extends the idea of multitasking into applications, so that specific operations within a single application can be subdivided into individual threads, each of which can theoretically run in parallel. Then, the operating system can divide processing time not only among different applications, but also among each thread within an application. For example, in a LabVIEW multithreaded program, the application might be divided into three threads — a user interface thread, a data acquisition thread, and an instrument control thread — each of which can be assigned a priority and operate independently. Thus, multithreaded applications can have multiple tasks progressing in parallel along with other applications.

Multiprocessing, such as hyperthreading, refers to two or more processors in one computer, each of which can simultaneously run a separate thread. Thus, a single-threaded application can run on only one processor at a time. A multithreaded application can have two separate threads executing simultaneously on two processors. In the LabVIEW multithreaded example, the data acquisition thread could run on one processor while the user interface thread runs on another processor. Single-threaded applications can have a serious effect on system performance.

Oracle, The beauty in normalized database

Normalized database can chase querying skill at any point of time. Designing a normalized database not only saves hard disk memory but also enables more flexible output. The only thing is asks is right skill of querying to retrieve results.

In the following example, tariff for different category of consumers is given with different slabs applicable for a specific period. The only transaction, herein, is month wise unit consumptions. When a database is properly normalized, it requires no unnecessary field and tables to capture the calculation fields. It can come dynamically irrespective of the time-period.

There Is Greatness All Around You

There are many people who could be Olympic champions, All-Americans who have never tried. I’d estimate five million people could have beaten me in the pole vault the years I won it, at least five million. Men who were stronger, bigger and faster than I was, could have done it, but they never picked up a pole, never made the feeble effort to pick their legs off the ground to try to get over the bar.

Greatness is all around us. It’s easy to be great because great people will help you. What is fantastic about all the conventions I go to is that the greatest in the business will come and share their ideas, their methods and their techniques with everyone else. I have seen the greatest salesmen open up and show young salesmen exactly how they did it. They don’t hold back. I have also found it true in the world of sports.

I’ll never forget the time I was trying to break Dutch Warmer Dam’s record. I was about a foot below his record, so I called him on the phone. I said, "Dutch, can you help me? I seem to have leveled off. I can’t get any higher."

He said, "Sure, Bob, come on up to visit me and I’ll give you all I got." I spent three days with the master, the greatest pole vaulter in the world. For three days, Dutch gave me everything that he’d seen. There were things that I was doing wrong and he corrected them. To make a long story short, I went up eight inches. That great guy gave me the best that he had. I’ve found that sports champions and heroes willingly do this just to help you become great, too.
John Wooden, the great UCLA basketball coach, has a philosophy that every day he is supposed to help someone who can never reciprocate. That’s his obligation. When in college working on his masters thesis on scouting and defensive football, George Allen wrote up a 30-page survey and sent it out to the great coaches in the country. Eighty-five percent answered it completely.

Great people will share, which is what made George Allen one of the greatest football coaches in the world. Great people will tell you their secrets. Look for them, call them on the phone or buy their books. Go where they are, get around them, talk to them. It is easy to be great when you get around great people.

by Bob Richards, Olympic Athlete

Successful people know what they want

In whatever position you find yourself determine your objective first.  Until your thoughts are linked to a purpose there can be no accomplishment.  There is no achievement without goals.  If you don't know where you are going,  how can you expect to get there.  The world has the habit of making room for the person whose words and actions show that they know where they are going.

Goals give you a starting place and a destination.  With them, you will be able to determine what it will cost you to get there.  In your pursuit of them, you will be going someplace.  Only you can determine what you want.  You can decide on your major objectives, targets, and aims.  Knowing where you are going is all you need to get there.

Be Thankful

... Be thankful ... That you don't already have everything you desire
... if you did, what would there be to look forward to?

... Be thankful ... When you don't know something
... for it gives you the opportunity to learn.

... Be thankful ... For the difficult times
... during those times you grow.

... Be thankful ... For your limitations
... they give you opportunities for improvement.

... Be thankful ... For each new challenge
... which will build your strength and character.

... Be thankful ... For your mistakes
... they will teach you valuable lessons.

... Be thankful ... When you're tired and weary
... because it means you've given your all.

... It's easy ... To be thankful for the 'good' things
... yet, a life of rich fulfillment comes to those who are thankful for the setbacks.

... Gratitude can ... Turn a negative into a positive
... find a way to be thankful for your troubles and they can become your blessings.

Recipe For Forever

Gather all of the ingredients together, so that they are close at hand! Get a clean cloth and wipe the bowl clean of any lingering dust from the past.  Take maturity, respect and friendship, and stir gently.  Add unlimited amounts of compassion and kindness, and mix well.  To this, add caring by the handfuls and fold in trust.

Continue stirring gently, adding listening, honesty, and large amounts of communication.  Slip in some dreams, goals, and firm pieces of keeping promises.  Bake in a home filled with peace, beauty and serenity.  Before you taste the finished product, sprinkle liberally with patience, love, and a touch of spice.

Serve very hot, with imagination on the side.

The Smile

A Smile costs nothing, but gives much.  It enriches those who receive, without making poorer those who give.   It takes but a moment, but the memory of it sometimes lasts forever.  None is so rich or mighty that he can get along without it, and none is so poor, but that he can be made rich by it.  A Smile creates happiness in the home, fosters good will in business, and is the countersign of friendship.

It brings rest to the weary, cheer to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad, and it is nature's best antidote for trouble.  Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed, or stolen, for it is something that is of no value to anyone, until it is given away.

Some people are too tired to give you a smile; Give them one of yours, as none needs a smile so much as he who has no more to give

Short Story ... The Choice

A woman came out of her house and saw three old men with long white beards sitting in her front yard. She did not recognize them. She said, "I don't think I know you, but you must be hungry. Please come in and have something to eat."

"Is the man of the house home?" they asked. "No," she said, "he's out." "Then we cannot come in," they replied.

In the evening when her husband came home, she told him what had happened.

"Go tell them I am home and invite them in!" The woman went out and invited the men in. "We do not go into a house together," they replied. "Why is that?" she wanted to know. One of the old men explained, "His name is Wealth," said pointing to one of his friends, and said, pointing to another one, "He is Success, and I am Love." Then he added, "Now go in and discuss with your husband which one of us you want in your home."

The woman went in and told her husband what was said. Her husband was overjoyed.

"How nice!" he said. "since that is the case, let us invite Wealth. Let him come in and fill our home with wealth!" His wife disagreed. "My dear, why don't we invite Success?" Their daughter-in-law was listening from another corner of the house. She jumped in with her own suggestion: "Would it not be better to invite Love? Our home will then be filled with love!" "Let us heed our daughter-in-law's advice," said the husband to his wife." Go out and invite Love to be our guest." The woman went out and asked the three old men, "Which one of you is Love? Please come in and be our guest." Love got up and started walking toward the house. The other two also got up and followed him. Surprised, the woman asked Wealth and Success: "I only invited Love, why are you coming in?"

The old men replied together: " If you had invited Wealth or Success, the other two of us would have stayed out, but since you invited Love, wherever he goes, we go with him. Wherever there is Love, there is Wealth and Success!!!"

"Where there is pain, we wish you peace and mercy. Where there is self-doubting, we wish you a renewed confidence in your ability to work through it. Where there is tiredness, or exhaustion, we wish you understanding, patience, and renewed strength. Where there is fear, we wish you love, and courage."

Short Story ... The Optimist

There is a story of identical twins. One was a hope-filled optimist. “Everything is coming up roses!” The other was a said and hopeless pessimist. He thought that Murphy, as in Murphy’s Law, was an optimist. The worried parents of the boys brought them to the local psychologist.

He suggested to the parents a plan to balance the twins’ personalities. “On their next birthday, put them in separate rooms to open their gifts. Give the pessimist the best toys you can afford, and give the optimist a box of manure”. The parents followed these instructions and carefully observed the results.

When they peeked in on the pessimist, they heard him audibly complaining, “I don’t like the color of this computer…I’ll bet this calculator will break…I don’t like this game…I know someone who’s got a bigger toy car than this…”

Tiptoeing across the corridor, the parents peeked in and saw their little optimist gleefully throwing the manure up in the air. He was giggling. “You can’t fool me! Where there’s this much manure, there’s gotta be a pony!"

Short Story ... Refusing to Accept Failure

Sir Edmund Hillary was the first man to climb Mount Everest. On May 29, 1953 he scaled the highest mountain then known to man-29,000 feet straight up. He was knighted for his efforts. He even made American Express card commercials because of it! However, until we read his book, High Adventure, we don't understand that Hillary had to grow into this success. You see, in 1952 he attempted to climb Mount Everest, but failed. A few weeks later a group in England asked him to address its members.

Hillary walked on stage to a thunderous applause. The audience was recognizing an attempt at greatness, but Edmund Hillary saw himself as a failure. He moved away from the microphone and walked to the edge of the platform. He made a fist and pointed at a picture of the mountain. He said in a loud voice, "Mount Everest, you beat me the first time, but I'll beat you the next time because you've grown all you are going to grow... but I'm still growing!"

Short Story ... The Obstacle in Our Path

In ancient times, a king had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the king's wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed the king for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the big stone out of the way.

Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. On approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded. As the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the king indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learned what many others never understand. Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve one's condition.

Ye zindagi kisi manzil pe ruk nahi sakati

Na munh chhupa ke jiyo aur na sar jhuka ke jiyo
Gamon ka daur bhi aaye to muskura ke jiyo
Na munh chhupa ke jiyo aur na sar jhuka ke jiyo

Ghata mein chhupake sitaare fana nahi hote
Andheri raat ke dil mein diye jala ke chalo
Na munh chhupa ke jiyo aur na sar jhuka ke jiyo

Ye zindagi kisi manzil pe ruk nahi sakati

Is Gham Ko Maar Daalo

Hamko Bhi Gham Ne Maara, Tumko Bhi Gham Ne Maara
Ham Sab Ko Gham Ne Maara, Is Gham Ko Maar Daalo

Yeh Gham Kabhi Khushi Ka Armaan Banke Aaya
Hanste Hue Yeh Dil Mein Mehmaan Banke Aaya
Ghar Se Ise Nikaalo, Is Gham Ko Maar Daalo

Din Ko Tadapte Hain Woh Raaton Ko Jaagte Hain
Nadaan Hain Bade Woh Jo Gham Se Bhaagte Hain
Hanskar Gale Lagaalo, Is Gham Ko Maar Daalo

Har Aarzoo Hai Chhoti Yeh Zindagi Badi Hai
Woh Saamne Nazar Ke Dekho Khushi Khadi Hai
Aawaaz Do Bulaalo, Is Gham Ko Maar Daalo

Muskuraavo Toh Koi Baat Bane

Ponch Kar Ashq Apni Ankhon Se, Muskuraavo Toh Koi Baat Bane !
Sar Jhukaane Se Kuch Nahin Hoga, Sar Uthaavo Toh Koi Baat Bane !

Zindagi Bheek Mein Nahin Milti, Zindagi Badh Ke Cheeni Jaati Hai
Apna Haq Sang-dil Zamaane Se, Cheen Paavo Toh Koi Baat Bane !
Sar Jhukaane Se Kuch Nahin Hoga, Sar Uthaavo Toh Koi Baat Bane !

Rang Aur Nasl Zaat Aur Mazhab, Joh Bhi Ho Admi Se Kamtar Hai
Is Haqeeqat Ko Tum Bhi Meri Tarah, Maan Jaavo Toh Koi Baat Bane !
Sar Jhukaane Se Kuch Nahin Hoga, Sar Uthaavo Toh Koi Baat Bane !

Nafraton Ke Jahaan Mein Humko, Pyaar Ki Bastiyaan Basani Hai
Door Rehna Koi Kamaal Nahin, Paas Aavo Toh Koi Baat Bane !
Sar Jhukaane Se Kuch Nahin Hoga, Sar Uthaavo Toh Koi Baat Bane !
